Tengo configurado Logitech c920. Con la ayuda de un usuario experimentado de Ask Ubuntu, instalé GUVCview, el panel de control de Linux Video4 y el probador de utilidades QT V4L2 aquí. Puedo cambiar de la cámara web integrada de mi Toshiba a mi cámara web externa usando GUVCview.
Sin embargo, cuando inicio un videochat en Google Hangouts, selecciona automáticamente la cámara de mi computadora portátil como predeterminada. Me gustaría cambiar mi configuración predeterminada para usar siempre una cámara externa, pero no encuentro dónde está esta opción.

Si ejecuto Gstreamer-properties en la terminal me sale el selector multimedia. Cambio la entrada predeterminada a externa, la luz azul en la cámara externa se enciende (cuando presiono "probar"), pero no hay imagen.

Tengo una configuración predeterminada en el selector de sistemas multimedia para configurar la cámara web c920 y, sin embargo, cuando abro el chat de video o GUVC, abre la cámara de la computadora portátil.

Según la respuesta de @hopeithelps, parece que los programas toman /dev/video0 como la cámara web predeterminada. En mi sistema, /dev/video0 es inicialmente la cámara integrada, mientras que /dev/video1 aparece/desaparece automáticamente cuando se conecta/desconecta la cámara web externa.
Así que acabo de escribir un comando simple para configurar /dev/video0 para que apunte a la "mejor cámara disponible":la cámara web si está presente y la cámara integrada de lo contrario. Actualmente tengo que invocar este script manualmente después de conectar/desconectar la cámara web. Sin embargo, el micrófono cambia automáticamente al "mejor micrófono" porque seguí esta respuesta de askUbuntu.
Rant:¿No debería Ubuntu tener un enfoque unificado para conectar en caliente la pantalla, la cámara, el altavoz, el micrófono (y también el teclado, el mouse, MIDI,...?). Todas estas cosas parecen requerir retoques por separado. Creo que gnome-display-manager tiene el diseño ideal:recuerda mi configuración anterior cuando conecto una pantalla que he usado antes.

Probado con guvcview y Google Hangouts, utilizando dos cámaras web Logitech diferentes. Estoy ejecutando Ubuntu 13.10 (en realidad Mint Petra) en un Thinkpad T530i.
