¿Errores al procesar paquetes de Python en la salida de cada comando Apt?

Encuentro una larga lista de errores que terminan en E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) cada vez que intento ejecutar sudo apt-get ... y no puedo entender por qué. Por ejemplo:

Varios paquetes están intentando ejecutar pycompile programa durante su ejecución. dpkg-query -S */pycompile nos dice que pycompile es un programa que forma parte de python-minimal paquete. Apt no se queja del paquete faltante, pero parece que falta el programa. Puede restaurar el paquete dañado con:

sudo apt-get install -f --reinstall python-minimal

Si Apt se queja de que no puede volver a instalar ese paquete (por ejemplo, porque los paquetes están a medio instalar), debemos profundizar y descargar e instalar el paquete manualmente:

cd /tmp
apt-get download python-minimal
sudo dpkg -i python-minimal_*.deb
sudo apt-get install -f
